Blackwing 602 – “The Best Pencil Ever Made” Is Back

posted in: Blog, For Creators | 0
The Blackwing 602 has been know by many as “the best pencil ever made” for a long time.  It was first introduced in the 1930’s by Eberhard Faber and since then it has built up quite a reputation, a favorite of Legendary Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer and Academy Award winners.
The list of known users includes John Steinbeck, Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein and Chuck Jones who used Blackwings to create Bugs Bunny and other Looney Tunes characters.
In 1998 it was discontinued.  Blackwings started going for as much as $40 a pencil as artist bought up as many as they could. Older Blackwings can be had for $100 and over.   Thankfully, Palomino took over and started producing Blackwings again in 2010. Some critics say that it doesn’t live up to the original Blackwing 602 and that Palomino is just taking advantage of the Blackwing name, while others believe that it is worthy of
the original Blackwing 602.  Most people agree though that the Palomino Blackwing 602 is one of the best pencils out there, and that it is the closest thing to “the best pencil ever” currently being made.
I wouldn’t know if it really is “the best pencil ever made”, but Blackwing 602’s are definitely my pencil of choice.
Don’t take my word for it though, go pickup a box and try them out.
